What is Child-centered Play Therapy?
a different experience than everyday play…
My main modality in working with children is Child-Centered Play Therapy. Play is a child’s natural way of self-expression and in using this approach children are invited to ‘play out’ their feelings and problems. Through play children can find it easier to communicate and share what is happening in their world when they might struggle to put into words what they are experiencing. Child-Centered Play Therapy is a different experience than everyday play for the child as the Counsellor encompasses a certain set of skills that encourages self-expression and allows for the child to communicate not only to the counsellor but also to themselves and can explore through play different ways and learn new skills and strategies to overcome their struggles that they might find useful in their every day life.
I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Narrative Therapy and I will determine which approach will be best suited for each client to receive the best possible results.
In your first session the most important thing for your child is that they feel safe and they know they can trust me as their counsellor. I will be working hard to gain that trust and making sure they feel safe and comfortable to be able to express what might be going on for them.
